Chapter 11: Disembark!! & Chapter 12: It's Over!!

CHAPTER 11

Summary

Kakashi bandages up Naruto's wound, which is healing surprisingly quickly. Team 7 and Tazuna go, via boat, to the Wave Country without being detected. Tazuna explains that a wealthy, corrupt shipping magnate called Gatou is after him, and he lied about the mission at first because they were too poor to afford a B-rank mission. However, Kakashi agrees to continue guarding him until he reaches his home.

Naruto, determined to out-do Sasuke, overreacts at any sign of movement and ends up impaling a rabbit to a tree. Kakashi notices the odd color of the rabbit's fur, and deduces that it had been caged for the purpose of body switching. He orders everyone to duck just in time to avoid a mysterious mist ninja's attack, who is then revealed to be a dangerous missing-nin, Momochi Zabuza.

New characters

1. Gatou, the rich corrupt shipping magnate

2. Momochi Zabuza, the dangerous missing-nin

Things that the characters learn

1. Team 7 learn that Tazuna is wanted dead by Gatou, because Gatou wants to take over the Wave Country's shipping industry but Tazuna's project to bridge the country with the mainland is in the way.

2. The mission is a lot more dangerous than it first seemed, especially with the ominous appearance of Zabuza.

Things that we learn

1. The power of the nine-tails inside Naruto makes his wounds heal quickly

2. Kakashi is a pretty famous ninja who has some sort of skill called "sharingan", assumedly having something to do with his concealed left eye.

Foreshadowing

[Not much here, but there are little things I could mention just so it looks good~]

1. Roots of the rivalry between Sasuke and Naruto; how petty and childish it is at first compared to how they nearly kill each other later on.

2. We see Sakura get mad at Naruto showing off and whack him pretty hard -- possibly foreshadowing how she becomes just like Tsunade? Possibly foreshadowing her role of cooling down the rivalry between the hot-headed genin?

Discussion

1. What did you expect when Kakashi began revealing his left eye in the last panel?

2. First impressions of Zabuza? Any theories as to why he doesn't have any eyebrows?

3. Does anyone else wonder why Gatou didn't just blow up the bridge or something a lot more simple like that?

Art

The line across his face - possibly a tribute to Iruka-sensei?
And does anyone have a clue what the eagle[?] in the background is meant to symbolise?

Kakashi tending Naruto's wound, a cute paternal!Kakashi moment IMO

Poor Naruto's failed attempts at out-doing Sasuke.

...0_o;;

Enter Zabuza.

Ooh, ominous...

CHAPTER 12

Summary

Kakashi orders the genin not to get involved in the fight, and reveals his sharingan. We learn about it's powers and Kakashi's fame as the copy ninja. Zabuza uses hidden mist no jutsu to launch a surprise attack with one of his water clones. Thinking that Kakashi has fallen for the water clone trick, the real Zabuza sneaks up and attacks Kakashi, only to find that he hasn't attacked the real Kakashi, but a water clone. Zabuza is surprised that Kakashi had copied the technique so quickly in such thick mist. He is caught and held at kunai-point by the real Kakashi, who tells him "it's over". However, Zabuza laughs at him and tells him that he cannot defeat him with his "monkey-like imitations".

New characters

None.

Things that the characters learn

1. Kakashi has the sharingan, which allows him to read and copy all types of taijutsu, genjutsu, and ninjutsu. He has copied over 1000 techniques. However, his sharigan isn't "perfect".

2. Zabuza's techniques: hidden mist no jutsu and water clone no jutsu.

Things that we learn

1. The sharingan is only meant to appear in certain members of the Uchiha clan.

2. Sasuke can be a bit of a wimp at times.

Foreshadowing

1. Kakashi's proclamation of "I don't let my comrades die" - foreshadowing for the Kakashi Gaiden; he obviously has learnt his lesson from losing Obito.

2. Sasuke telling us that the Sharingan was a trait of the Uchiha clan, and obviously being of the Uchiha clan and one of the main characters, it was pretty inevitable that he'd develop the Sharingan too.

Discussion

1. Before you read the Kakashi Gaiden, what were your theories as to why Kakashi had the Sharingan? Did you think that maybe he was a long lost member of the Uchiha clan?

2. So you had your chance to squee over Sasuke - how much did you squee over Kakashi in this chapter?

Art

A beautiful portrayal of Kakashi the copy ninja for this week's title page.

And lo, the Sharingan.

Team 7 automatically snap into position to protect Tazuna

Naruto begins respecting his sensei, xD

I love Kakashi's smile in this panel; it's reassuring and yet there's something quite bitter and emooo about it

Everyone freaks out, Kakashi just frowns. ♥

Kakashi throws Zabuza's words right back at him.

[I'm sorry if I missed anything important... ^^;;;]

My absolute favourite part of these two chapters was "I don't let...my comrades die" and it's still one of my favouritest (thats not a word, is it?) moments in the entire series.

What did you expect when Kakashi began revealing his left eye in the last panel?
My first thought was he lacked depth perception and had a huge blind-spot without his left eye; then I realized people don't usually care about that sort of thing when they design characters (though he does get almost hit by a boulder in Kakashi Gaiden because of that blind spot), so my second thought was something like that guy in x-men, some sort of lazer vision.

First impressions of Zabuza? Any theories as to why he doesn't have any eyebrows?
Evil doesn't have eyebrows. Look at Gaara.

Does anyone else wonder why Gatou didn't just blow up the bridge or something a lot more simple like that? My guess is that he wanted to kill the people responsible so A. They couldn't just build another one and B. People would be scared to be affiliated with it. Then he would've blown it up, just to be dramatic. (Or he could've had it built then charged a toll, I would've done that, more money ^_^)

So you had your chance to squee over Sasuke - how much did you squee over Kakashi in this chapter?
Tons! I ran around showing all of my friends the cool pictures of Kakashi. Now they won't even let me mention Naruto...T_T

Sasuke can be a bit of a wimp at times. I really liked this. It shows that Sasuke isn't a super-genius who can do anything and that he still, even with all thats happened to him, really is a (what, 12 year old?) kid at heart.
